The men won their sixth straight and record 33rd conference title. The Purple Raiders tallied 202 points, 31 points ahead of second place Ohio Northern with 171 points. Rounding out the top-five was John Carroll with 103 points, Baldwin Wallace with 79 points and Otterbein with 77 points.
Sixth-year head coach Kevin Lucas and his staff garnered OAC Coaching of Staff of the Year honors.
The Purple Raiders will look to junior Tyler Neff (Navarre/Fairless), who is coming off an exciting indoor season. At the indoor championship, Neff set a new conference record and won the 400 meters title with a time of 48.88, won the 200 meters with a time of 22.32 and was a member of the winning 4x200 relay. For his efforts he earned OAC Sprint Athlete of the Meet.
A year ago at the outdoor championship, Neff took home a second place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 48.31.
Ohio Northern will look for another strong showing with the help of senior Kase Schalois (Van Wert), who won the 5,000-meter run (15:09.41) and the 3,000 steeplechase (9:22.48) to earned OAC Outstanding Distance Runner of the Meet. Schalois also was named OAC Distance Runner of the Meet during the indoor season.
On the women’s side, Mount Union won its seventh straight and eighth overall outdoor title. The Purple Raiders collected 178 points to edge out second place Ohio Northern (176.5) by just 1.5 points. Otterbein took home third place with 122 points, followed by Baldwin Wallace with 111.5 points and John Carroll with 92 points.
The Purple Raiders will be returning senior Marisa Rinaldi (Tallmadge/Tallmadge), who placed second in the 4x400 relay and the 400 meters with a time of 57.33 at last year’s outdoor championship.
Rinaldi and teammate junior Katie Goedecke (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) are both coming off an impressive indoor season, earning OAC Co-Outstanding Sprint Athlete of the Meet honors. At the indoor meet, Rinaldi placed third in the 200 meters (26.03), won the 400 meters (58.19) and was a member of the conference record setting 4x200 meter relay. Goedecke won the 55 meter dash in 7.23, placed second in the 200 meters (25.56) and was a member of the conference record setting 4x200 meter relay.
Ohio Northern will be led by junior Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes), who was named the OAC Outstanding Distance Runner of the Meet at last year’s outdoor championship with wins in the 1,500-meter run (4:37.57, OAC Record) and the 800-meter run (2:17.79). She also took home this honor during the indoor season.
ONU eighth-year head coach Jason Maus and his staff were voted as the OAC Coaching of Staff of the Year.
The top three finishers in every event earn All-OAC honors.
Mount Union will host the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship meet at Spire Institute, May 25-27, in Geneva, Ohio
