Baldwin-Wallace Women and Ohio Northern Men
Capture 2008 Indoor Track and Field Championship
Friday-Saturday, March 7-8
WESTERVILLE, OHIO –The Baldwin-Wallace women captured their 18th overall Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championship, while the Ohio Northern men took home their third overall OAC title at the 2008 Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Otterbein Friday-Saturday, March 7-8.
On the women’s side, the Yellow Jackets took first place with 137 points, while Otterbein finished runner-up with 134 points. Ohio Northern took third place with 96 points followed by Capital (82), Heidelberg (79), John Carroll (55), Marietta (41), Mount Union (35), Wilmington (27), and Muskingum (16).
B-W junior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood) took home individual titles in the one-mile (5:12.97) and the 3000-meter run (10:31.98). Scullion was named the Julie Zajac Distance Athlete of the Meet for her efforts.
Also earning individual tiles for the Yellow Jackets was senior Kristen Paulsen (Oberlin/Firelands) in the high jump (5-01.75) and junior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) in the 500-meter run. The distance medley relay team of freshman Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum), sophomore Brittany Giesken (Ottawa/ Ottawa-Glandorf), freshman Krysten Kovach (North Royalton) and junior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) took first with a time of 12:31.33.
Baldwin-Wallace Head Coach, Bill Taraschke and his staff were named the Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
Otterbein junior Allyson Tobin (Lancaster/Fisher Catholic) was named the Phil Gordon Field Athlete of the Meet for her OAC record mark of 46-03.50 in the shot put.
Heidelberg sophomore Judy Bataille (Felicity/Felicity-Franklin) won the 300-meter dash (41.39) and the 55-meter dash (7.12, OAC record) to be named the Fred Raizk Sprinter of the Meet.
On the men’s side ONU took first with 187 points, while Heidelberg finished runner-up with 119 points. Mount Union took home third place with 114 points followed by Baldwin-Wallace (70 points), Otterbein (67), Wilmington (43), Capital (38), Marietta (30), John Carroll (24), and Muskingum (10).
Ohio Northern junior Jimmy O’Brien (Pemberville/Eastwood) won the one-mile run (4:13.46) and the 800-meter run to be named the Distance Athlete of the Meet. O’Brien was also a member of the winning distance medley relay team (10:26.50), along junior Eric Porter (Wauseon) and freshman Evan Heyman (Norwalk/Monroeville) and Travis Isenberg (Kingsville/Edgewood)
ONU sophomore Joe Amstutz (Bluffton) was named the Don Frail Sprinter of the Meet for his winning performance in the 500-meter run (1:06. 30). Amstutz was also a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay team, along with freshman Shane Huntley (Sandusky/Perkins) and Jeff Messmer (Canal Winchester) and O’Brien.
Also winning individual titles for the Polar Bears was junior Thomas Adam (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit) in the 5000-meter run (15:23.93), senior Ryan Roberston (Pickerington/Central) in the 55-meter dash and sophomore Paul Metzner (Delphos/St. Johns) in the pole vault (15-05.00).
ONU Head Coach Brian Cole and his staff were named the Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
Heidelberg sophomore Julius Higginbotham (Elyria/ Elyria) won the long jump (23-08.00) and Muskingum freshman Demetrius Bailey (Buffalo, NY/Olean) won the triple jump (46-08.75). For their efforts, both were named the Bud Yoest Field Athlete of the Meet.
The top-three relays and individuals earn All-OAC honors.
