Mason, OHIO -- The number one-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College women’s tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival and third-seeded Ohio Northern University, 5-1, in the OAC Championship match today (Saturday, April 26, 2008) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The victory advances the Yellow Jackets to next week’s NCAA Division III National Tournament.

With its win, B-W has won 16 straight dual matches this season, 24 straight OAC matches dating back to last season and two consecutive OAC regular season and two straight OAC Tournament titles. The Yellow Jackets are now 18-6 overall. With its loss, ONU ends its season at 20-6 overall.

In doubles play, B-W jumped out to 2-1 lead as the No.2 duo of freshman Caitlin Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and senior Krista Marshall (Medina/ Senior) won 8-6 and the No.3 tandem of sophomore Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and freshman Katie Marshall (Medina Senior) won, 9-8, including 7-2 in the tie-breaker. With their win at No.2 doubles, Pecinovsky and Krista Marshall are now 18-10 overall and Essig and Krista Marshall are now 12-8 overall.

In singles play, senior No.1 player Tiffany Allison (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston), Pecinovsky and junior No.6 player Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) all won in straight sets to close out the match. Allison’s win improved her season record to 13-13, Pecinovsky improved to 21-7 and Trampert to 20-5.

The B-W women had a 9-0 record during the OAC regular season and for the second straight season. B-W is the two-time OAC regular season champion, the defending OAC Tournament and last year became the first OAC women’s team to ever win a match in the NCAA Division III National Tournament when it defeated Albion (Mich.) College, 5-4, in the first round at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
