OAC WEEKLY SWIMMING & DIVING NOTES

 

Baldwin-Wallace- vs. Idle until OAC Championship

  This Week: Idle until 2007 OAC Championship Meet at the University of Akron from April 15-17; Last Week:  Idle;  Notes:  Sophomore Ambica Iyengar (Bangalore, INDIA) will receive the highest athletic honor from her state in the country of India. The Minister of Ambica's state will present the award and she will be feted at a dinner when she returns home this summer.

Mount Union- vs. Bison: Men W 119-53 …Women W 119-74

WOMEN: Mount Union's women's team (3-8, 0-4 OAC) won 119-74 over the Bison (0-10) Saturday afternoon, January 27 in Bethany, WV. The Raider women had several first place finishes, including Megan Smuckler (Canton/McKinley) in the 1000 free (12:18.49), Athena Miller (Wadsworth) in the 200 free (2:11.89), Kristin Bellay (Alliance/Marlington) in the 200 IM (2:33.36), and 200 back (2:28.62), Samantha Tecca(Northfield/Nordonia) in the one mete dive (187.15), and the three meter dive (179.55), Erin Schwing (Greensburg, PA/Greesburg-Salem) in the 200 butterfly (2:39.44), and the swim unit of Bellay, Rachel Weiss (North Olmsted), Nicole Tranchita (Chesterland/West Geauga), and Miller in the 400 medley relay (4:50.10).

MEN: Mount Union's men's team (6-5, 2-2 OAC) won 119-53 over Bethany (0-9) Saturday afternoon, January 27 in Bethany, WV. The Raider men's team had several first place finishers, including Jon Billak (Brunswick) in the 1000 free (11:19.57), Dan Hampu (Alliance/Hawken) in the 200 free (1:57.13) and the 200 back (2:03.97), Donald Maclary (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) in the 50 free (22.30), and 100 free (49.68), Mark Rogers (Malvern/Central Catholic) in the 200 IM (2:14.27), and Erik Newman (Akron/Green) in the 200 butterfly (2:16.76), the swim unit of Maclary, Jeff Budzowski (Independence), Hampu, and Rogers in the 400 medley relay (3:48.04), and the unit of Maclary, Andy Neimes (Brecksville/Broadview Heights), Hampu, and Rogers in the 400 free relay (3:26.17).

Ohio Northern- vs. Ashland: Men L 89-145…Women, L 132-106… vs. Wooster, Men L 143-98…Women: L 141-99

WOMEN:  The Ohio Northern women’s swimming and diving team (6-6 overall, 4-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) wrapped up its 2006-07 regular season with a pair of non-conference dual meets over the weekend. On Fri., ONU fell 132-106 at No. 11-ranked (Division II) Ashland. Freshman Katie Moore (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) Moore won the 50 free in :26.07 and sophomore Traci Byrley (Celina) won the 1-meter diving with 169.90 points.  Freshman Terri Lynn Shigle (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) finished second right behind Byrley with 164.05 points. Shigle also finished second in the 3-meter diving with a score of 168.55.  Freshman Lacey Shumate (Bucyrus/Colonel Crawford) had two second place finishes in the meet. She was second in the 200 I.M. in 2:20.19 and was second in the 100 back in 1:04.94.

Senior Jessica Ewald (Tiffin/Calvert) was second in the 100 breast in 1:11.49, freshman Kim Randall (Milford) was second in the 500 free in 5:35.17 and sophomore Abby Pritchard (Canfield) was second in the 100 fly in 1:05.30- On Sat., ONU dropped a 141-99 decision at Wooster. Shumate and Randall led the Polar Bears with two first-place finishes apiece. Shumate won the 400 individual medley in 4:54.96 and joined Randall, Ewald and junior Sam Ruffing (Republic/Seneca East) to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:59.35. She also finished second in the 200 backstroke in 2:20.35. Randall also took a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:34.38 and was runner-up in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.15. Shigle won the 1-meter dive with a score of 206.25. The Lady Polar Bears will be idle until Feb. 15-17 when they host the OAC Championships at the University of Akron.

On Fri., ONU fell 145-89 at No. 10-ranked (Division II) Ashland.  Freshman Axel Brandt (Rocky River) won the 1-meter diving with a score of 204.65 and claimed the 3-meter diving with a score of 198.65. Sophomore Brett Kuhn (Tiffin/Columbian) finished second in the 100 free in 49.55 seconds.  On Sat., ONU dropped a 143-98 decision at Wooster.  Freshmen Brandt and Dan Henry (Tiffin/Columbian) led the Polar Bears with two wins each. Brandt took first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 214.50 and 219.80, respectively. Henry won the 400 individual medley in 4:42.99 and the 200 backstroke in 2:15.30. Kuhn won the 100 freestyle in 49.69 and was runner-up in the 200 freestyle in 1:49.14. Sophomore Nathaniel Peyton (Tinley Park, Ill.) won the 50 freestyle in 22.43. Junior Mike Anderson (Jenison, Mich.) took two individual second-place finishes in the 400 individual medley in 4:45.39 and the 200 backstroke in 2:14.42. Senior Erik Lange (Bainbridge Township/Kenston) was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.78 and joined Peyton, freshman Bill Neidinger (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and junior John Miller (Lebanon) for a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.71. Neidinger also had an individual second place in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.22.  The Polar Bears will be idle until Feb. 15-17 when they host the OAC Championships at the University of Akron.

Wilmington –vs. University of the Cumberland: Men L 136-53… Women L 108-84…vs. Mount Union, Men L 111-79…Women L 111-78

WOMEN: Senior Alisha Flatter (Arcanum) won two races and was part of a winning relay as Wilmington stroked past Mount Union. Flatter touched first in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke and teamed with sophomore Kacie Otting (Minster), senior Lindsay Smith (Berea) and sophomore Christy Clark (Xenia) to win the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Monica Collins (Kettering/Fairmont) won the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle, senior Dierdra Robison (Wilmington) won the 800 freestyle, sophomore Carolyn Shinsato (Batavia) won the 200 IM and Clark won the 100 freestyle. Against Cumberlands, Flatter won the 100 backstroke while Otting touched first in the 100 breaststroke.

 

MEN: Senior Bobby Shanesy (Troy) powered his way to a win in the 200-meter IM as the Quakers won three of the first five races against Mount Union. Freshman John Creech (Dayton/Centerville) continued his strong season with a win in the 800 freestyle. Sophomore Chris Lamb (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) touched first in the 50 freestyle.
