Wilmington falls to Washington in NCAA First Round

-Story provided by the Wilmington Information Department

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) — Halsey Ward hit four three-pointers, the final bomb coming with 12 seconds to play, as Washington (Mo.) edged Wilmington, 73-72, in NCAA Tournament first-round play at DePauw University Friday night.
The loss ends Wilmington’s season at 21-8 while Washington heads to the second round at 19-7.
“It was a great game between two very good teams,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said. “Neither team blinked. They got the lead in the first half and we came back at them, and they battled back in the second half. Losing a game on a late shot is always tough, but it was fitting that this game was decided the way it was.”
The Bears late-game heroics followed a frantic second-half comeback as Washington U. battled back from a 12-point deficit. It was a second-half comeback that didn’t look necessary in the game’s early moments.
Wilmington scored the game’s first three points when Gina Hyle (Lawrenceburg, Ind./McAuley) buried a bomb, but Washington answered with five straight points to take the lead.

The Lady Quakers spent the balance of the first half playing from behind. The Bears expanded their lead to 20-11 before WC senior All-American Katie Streck (Dayton/Carroll) loaded the squad on her shoulders and scored 10 straight points as Wilmington cut the deficit to 24-21.
     With starters Marianne McGoron (Hamilton/Fenwick),
Jackie Hauke (Sardinia/Whiteoak) and Kortney Kin (Upper Sandusky/Riverdale) sidelined with foul trouble, Wilmington’s bench was thrust front and center. Freshman Kristin Bingley (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) hit a three-pointer and Steph Prechtel (Wadsworth) scored, as Wilmington stayed close. Streck, who scored 17 points in the opening frame, finished the half with a three-point play that tied the score at 35.
“I told them after the game that the thing I might remember most about the game will be how well our bench played,” Scheve said. “Kristin comes in and hits a three on her first touch, and Steph has always been solid. Anne Haky did a really good job of leading us on the floor, and Allie Meranda is Allie Meranda. She gives such a tremendous effort. We felt good coming out of halftime tied.”
Like Streck in the first half, Hyle was the go-to player in the second. The senior forward scored six points as Wilmington opened the half with a 16-6 run to take a 51-41 lead.
The lead grew to 12 when Hauke hit a trey at 12:43, but the Bears launched their own long-distance assault. Ward hit three threes, the third at 7:58 to complete an 18-5 run and give Washington U. a 63-61 lead.
Hyle scored six straight as Wilmington bounced back to take a 67-63 lead. Hyle and Kin scored to keep Wilmington in a precarious lead, 71-70. Meranda (Georgetown) hit a free throw to extend the lead to 72-70 with 33 seconds to play.
Ward, though, had the final say as the junior guard struck from deep to sink the dagger and end Wilmington’s season.
Hyle led the Lady Quakers with 24 points. Streck closed her career with a double-double, scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kin scored 10.
    Wilmington out-rebounded Washington, 40-34.
The loss ended the careers of Streck, Hauke, Hyle and Haky (North Olmsted/Bay). Streck finishes with 1,629 career points, third best on the WC all-time scoring list and 11th in Ohio Athletic Conference history. Her 714 rebounds rank eighth on the WC all-time list. Hauke’s career stats include 792 points and 158 made three-pointers. Hyle scored 611 points and claimed 344 career rebounds. Haky, who had four assists against Washington, finished with 222 career assists, good for eighth place on the WC all-time list.
“This is the second straight year we’re graduating 3,000 points, but these kids are also great students, people and leaders,” Scheve said. “They came in four years ago to a program that had known a lot of success. Over the course of those four years, they grew as much as people and leaders than any group I’ve ever had. They grew up a little every year and they learned a lot from people who passed it down to them. I don’t think we were the most talented team in the world this year, but their desire to compete and be successful were the most important factors in the team’s overall success.”
