Wrestling:  Wrestlers-of-the-Week

2009-2010

February 15

Muskingum junior Chip Halko (Grove City/Biship Ready) went 3-0 (1-0 OAC) last week. Halko opened the week with an 8-2 decision over Wilmington and then followed up with two pins over Case Western (4:25) and RIT (2:13).

February 8

Baldwin-Wallace junior Tristan Stoll (Milan/Edison) went 3-0 (1-0 OAC) last week. Stoll open the week with a 20-7 win over Ohio Northern and went on to become the individual champion at 197-pounds at the John Summa Memorial Tournament with pins over Brockport and Waynesburg.  On the season, Stoll is 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.

Mount Union junior Bill Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban) went 5-0 (1-0 OAC) last week, including a major decision over Baldwin-Wallace. Schindel went 4-0 at the Pete Wilson Invite to win the 197-pound individual title. Schindel defeated Truman State (MO), Trine (IN), UW-Whitewater) and Chicago.

Heidelberg senior Matt Curley (Brecksville/Lakewood) went undefeated (4-0) at the Pete Wilson Invite to win the 165-pound individual tile and help the team to a runner-up finish. Curley also defeated Ohio Northern.

Ohio Northern freshman Kyle Kwiat (Tiffin Calvert) went 5-0 (1-0 OAC) last week, recording  two pins, one technical fall and a major decision at 174 pounds at the Monon Bell Classic  at Wabash. Kwiat also posted a pin over Muskingum. He is 29-3 on the season and is ranked No. 4 nationally.

Ohio Northern freshman Kyle Kwiat (Tiffin Calvert) finished the week with a 7-0 record (1-0 OAC) at 174 pounds, including four pins and a major decision.  On Tuesday, Kwiat recorded a pin over Wilmington and then went 6-0 at the Lycoming (Pa.) Duals, where he defeated wrestlers from #15 Wilkes, John Carroll, #28 Springfield, #29 Olivet and King’s.  Kwiat improves to 24-3 on the season and is currently ranked #4 nationally by the NWCA.

Baldwin-Wallace junior Tristan Stoll (Milan/Edison) went 2-0 (1-0 OAC) at 197 pounds last week. Stoll won by forfeit over Wilmington and recorded a pin (00:35) over Central (Iowa).

Mount Union senior Mike Manypenny (Salem) went 3-0 and won the 174-pound title at the Citrus Invitational to lead the Purple Raiders to the team title. Manypenny tallied three decisions (12-0 vs. Oneonta, 5-4 vs. Case, 8-7 Rhode Island, 8-7).

Ohio Northern 174-pound freshman Kyle Kwiat (Tiffin/Calvert) went 5-0 last week to improve to 14-0 on the season. Kwiat earned a major decision over #12 Cornell (15-2)  and #23 Johnson & Wales (19-8), pinned #20 Luther (3:39) and Chicago (3:56) and earned a technical fall over Mt. St. Joseph (3:34/16-0).

Mount Union 285-pound sophomore Derrick Hesson (Dexter City/ Caldwell) went 1-0 last week with a pin (2:25) over John Carroll to help lead the Purple Raiders to a 31-13 victory.

Ohio Northern junior Luke Miller (Indiana, PA/Indiana Area) recorded three pins and a decision en route to the 157-pound title at the ONU Invitational last week. Miller defeated Zach Mizer of Heidelberg , 6-0,  in the championship match, making him 2-0 against OAC opponents. Miller also defeated Connor Suba of John Carroll, 6-0, to finish the week with a 5-0 (1-0 OAC) record.

John Carroll 197-pound junior James Nemunaitis (Brecksville-Broadview) went 1-0 last week with a 14-3 victory over Cleveland State (Div. I) to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Ohio Northern 157-pound junior Luke Miller (Indiana, PA/Indiana Area) went 4-0 at the Buckeye Duals last week. Miller went 3-0 with a pin and two major decisions at 157 pounds and also posted an impressive 4-2 victory over No. 4-ranked Christopher Dahlheimer of Lycoming at 165 pounds.

November 16

 

Baldwin-Wallace 174-pound junior Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/Woodbrige) went 4-0 during the first two weeks of competition at the B-W Quad meet and during a dual match versus Case Western Reserve. Scavuzzo won by decision against all four opponents by a combined 24-1 scored.

November 17

 

John Carroll sophomore Adam Kriwinsky (Chesterland/University School) placed third at 133 pounds with a 5-1 record at the National Catholic Invitational. He won his final fourmatches by a combined score of 42-10.

November 24

Baldwin-Wallace senior Brian Bucher (Ottawa Hills/Avon Lake) went 4-0 at 133 pounds against nationally-rank opponents at the Olivet Duals last weekend.  He has improved his season record to 9-2.

John Carroll sophomore Jim Nemunaitis (Broadview Hts.) went up against Cleveland State sophomore Eric Schwartz at 197 pounds and won by major decision (15-3) to improve his record to 5-1.

Mount Union freshman  Kevin Shadrach (Parma) went 1-0 last week and led the Raiders to an upset over John Carroll. With Mount Union down 16-0, he scored a key win at 149 pounds that sparked a  rally and led the team to a 23-20 victory.

December 15

Heidelberg junior  Zach Mizer (Canton/Perry) went 4-1 at 157 pounds at the Ohio Northern Invitational last week. He finished second to top-seeded Jason Brew of Olivet College by a 7-0 decision. En route to the championship match Mizer opened the day pinning Cumberland’s Adam Myers in 1:36, and added a 15-3 major decision over Campbellsville’s Josh Ashbrook, along with two decisions. Mizer is ranked fifth in the nation.

Ohio Northern sophomore  Luke Miller (Indiana, PA) led the Polar Bears at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas with victories at 157 pounds over wrestlers from Wartburg, #2 Coe, #27 Lakeland and #11 (NAIA) Embry-Riddle. Miller improves to 14-2 on the season.

John Carroll freshman  Clarence Semple (Cleveland/St. Edward) won the 141-pound weight class at the Citrus Open (FL) with a 4-0 record for this first collegiate title. The Blue Streak placed second among 11 teams. Semple also won a dual meet match against SUNY-Oneonta by major decision to complete his Florida trip with a perfect 5-0 record.

January 12

Muskingum sophomore Todd Neptune (New Concord/John Glenn) went a perfect 5-0 at 184 pounds last week with a win over Baldwin-Wallace and four victories at the Lycoming National Duals.  

January 19

Wilmington sophomore Adam Salyers (Mechanicsburg) raised his OAC record to 3-0, 23-4 overall, with a perfect 4-0 week that started with a win over John Carroll and ended with the heavyweight title at the North Central Invitational. Salyers has won eight straight matches.

Heidelberg sophomore 125 pounds Jarred Hoxie (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Northern) led the Berg to their fourth OAC victory on the year with a win over Ohio Northern last week.  Hoxie pinned nationally ranked David Penny (6:55) to give the Berg an early 6-0 lead.

February 2

 

John Carroll senior Dan Mizener (Mason) went 1-0 in the OAC and 6-2 overall at 149 pounds last week. Mizener opened the week with a 7-4 win over Heidelberg’s Levy. He also placed fourth at the Pete Wilson Invitational with a 5-2 record, helping the Blue Steaks to a 5th place finish out of 31 teams. Among his five wins were two technical falls, a major decision and a pin.
