Mount Union Set to Host the 2010 OAC Wrestling Championships

-Ohio Northern Wins OAC Regular-Season Crown-

Austintown OH – Mount Union will host the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)  Wrestling Championship on Saturday, February 20 starting at 10a.m. Seven OAC teams that sponsor wrestling will compete for the Conference crown: Baldwin-Wallace, Heidelberg, John Carroll, Mount Union, Muskingum, Ohio Northern and Wilmington.

Ohio Northern captured its fifth OAC Regular-Season crown with a 6-0 conference (15-10 overall) record and will look to capture its first OAC Tournament title since 2001.  Heidelberg finished the regular-season with a 5-1 OAC (9-7 overall) record and will look to repeat as tournament champions.

A year ago, Heidelberg scored 101 points to capture the tournament crown, followed by Mount Union with 68.5. John Carroll (61.5), Ohio Northern (59.5), Baldwin-Wallace (29.5), Wilmington (25.5) and Muskingum (23) rounded out the field. Five of the 10 OAC individual champions returned to the mat this season.  

ONU returns the 157-pound champion, junior Luke Miller (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area). This season, Miller went 6-0 in OAC competition, 33-4 overall.  Miller was named the 2009 OAC Wrestler-of-the-Year and earned All-America honors after finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships. The Polar Bears will also look to freshman Kyle Kwiat (Tiffin/Calvert), who went undefeated in the OAC with a 6-0 record, 36-4 overall at 174 pounds.

At 165-pounds, Heidelberg returns junior Matt Curley (Brecksville/Lakewood). Curley went undefeated in the Conference with a 6-0 (24-4 overall) record and will look to repeated as the individual champion.

John Carroll senior Ben Adams (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) went 6-0 in OAC action (26-3 overall)  and will look to repeat as the 184-pound champion.

Baldwin-Wallace junior Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/Woodbridge), returns this season with a 2-2 OAC record (14-4 overall) after capturing the 174-pound title a season ago.

Mount Union junior Bill Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban) claimed the 197-pound title a year ago and finished this season with a 4-0 OAC mark (19-2). Schindel earned All-America honors after an eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Wilmington will look to junior Adam Salyers (Mechanicsburg), who earned runner-up honors at 285 pounds last season. This season Salyers went undefeated in the OAC with a 6-0 record (17-6 overall). Also leading the way for the Quakers this season has been 125-pound sophomore Donny Herrington  (Cincinnati/Sycamore) with a perfect 6-0 mark in OAC action (19-6 overall).

The winners and runner-up at each respective weight class at the OAC Championship will earn All-OAC honors. The Individual winners at each weight class will also earn an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships hosted by Coe College, Cornell College and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, March 5-6 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
