Mount Union Set to Host the 2010 OAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Mount Union will host the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1. Friday’s competition will start at noon and Saturday’s will begin at 10 a.m. All ten OAC schools will compete for the league title.
Ohio Northern captured both men’s and women’s crown a year ago. The ONU men finished the meet with 172 points to claim their first outdoor title, 42 points ahead of runner-up Heidelberg. Baldwin-Wallace finished third with 122.50 and was followed by Mount Union (102), Wilmington (64), Marietta (60), Otterbein (50), Capital (31), John Carroll (23) and Muskingum (22.50). The ONU women edged Baldwin-Wallace to claim their first outdoor title. The Polar Bears finished the meet with 125 points while the Yellow Jackets totaled 108. Capital and Otterbein tied for third with 97 points, and were followed by Marietta (82), Mount Union (78), Wilmington (69), Heidelberg (63), John Carroll (42) and Muskingum (16).
On the men’s side, nine individual champions from a year ago will return to defend their titles. Leading the way for ONU will be senior Alan Bowsher (Bowling Green), who won the 5,000 (15:37.35) and 10,000 (33:13.41) meter runs en route to being honored as the 2009 Most Outstanding Distance Runner. Baldwin-Wallace will look to senior Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve), who won the shot put and finished second in the discus to earn the 2009 Most Outstanding Field Athlete honor. Junior Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) will look to repeat as the discus champion (47.08m).Heidelberg returns senior Julius Higginbotham (Elyria) in the long jump (22-09.00) and sophomore Jordan Karnes (Egerton) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:25.66). Muskingum will be led in the field by senior Jarryd Ridgeway (Cadiz/Harrison Central) and junior Demetrius Bailey (Buffalo, NY/Olean). Ridgeway placed first in the javelin (58.23m), while Bailey won the triple jump (13.81m). Wilmington sophomore Braden McMonigle (Monroe/Lemon-Monroe) and Otterbein sophomore Austin Curbow (Gahanna/Lincoln) will return to defend their titles. McMonigle finished on top in the high jump (2.02m), while Curbow placed first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.36).
On the women’s side, 11 individual champions will be returning. ONU will be led by sophomore Nicole Hope (Wilmington) in the long jump (3.61m). Mount Union will return four individual champions, seniors Aubrey Loy (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) in the triple jump (10.90m) and Heather Stalter (Marietta) in the 10,000-meter run, along with junior Annie Patton (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) in the javelin (44.08m) and sophomore Aubree Jones (Falconer, NY/Falconer) in the discus. Stalter also finished second in the 5,000 meter run (19:03.45) en route to being named the 2009 Most Outstanding Distance Runner. Capital will also be led by four standout performers, sophomores Kwesi Seabrook (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) in the 400-meter dash (57.28) and Sarah Trick (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) in the 800-meter run (2:17.72), along with senior Jessica Starks (Akron/East) in the 200-meter dash (25.45) and junior Emily Goerig (Berlin Heights/Edison) in the shot put (13.03m). Goerig also finished second in the discus to claim the 2009 Most Outstanding Field Athlete honor. Wilmington returns senior Callen Martin (Cincinnati/Finneytown) in the 100-meter dash (12.35) and the long jump (5.65m). Baldwin-Wallace senior D’Arcy Hlavin (Berea) returns in the 1,500-meter run (4:46) to will round out the list.
