Capital Set to Host the 2009 OAC Track and Field Championship
Friday-Saturday, March 6-7
Austintown, OH- Capital will host the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday-Saturday, March 6-7, at the Capital Center. All ten OAC schools will vie for the league title. Friday’s competition will begin at 2:30p.m., while Saturday’s competition will begin at 10:00a.m. Spectators will be charged for admission, adults will be $5, a two day pass for will be $8, non-OAC students are $2 and OAC students are free.
At the 2008 OAC Championship, the Ohio Northern men captured their third overall title, while the Baldwin-Wallace women claimed their 18th overall title. On the women’s side, the Yellow Jackets took first place with 137 points, while Otterbein finished runner-up with 134 points. Ohio Northern took third place with 96 points followed by Capital (82), Heidelberg (79), John Carroll (55), Marietta (41), Mount Union (35), Wilmington (27), and Muskingum (16).
Baldwin-Wallace will return two individual champions from a year ago, including senior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood)who took home individual titles in the one-mile (5:12.97) and the 3000-meter run (10:31.98). Scullion was named the 2008 Julie Zajac Distance Athlete of the Meet for her efforts. B-W will also return the 500-meter (1:18.31) champion senior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg).
Otterbein senior Allyson Tobin (Lancaster/Fisher Catholic) was named the 2008 Phil Gordon Field Athlete of the Meet for her OAC record mark of 46-03.50 in the shot put. Heidelberg junior Judy Bataille (Felicity/Felicity-Franklin) won the 300-meter dash (41.39) and the 55-meter dash (7.12, OAC record) to be named the 2008 Fred Raizk Sprinter of the Meet.
On the men’s side in 2008, ONU took first with 187 points, while Heidelberg finished runner-up with 119 points. Mount Union took home third place with 114 points followed by Baldwin-Wallace (70 points), Otterbein (67), Wilmington (43), Capital (38), Marietta (30), John Carroll (24), and Muskingum (10).
Ohio Northern will return all, but one individual champion from a season ago, including, senior Jimmy O’Brien (Pemberville/Eastwood) who won the one-mile run (4:13.46) and the 800-meter run to be named the 2008 Distance Athlete of the Meet. ONU will also return junior Joe Amstutz (Bluffton) who was tabbed the 2008 Don Frail Sprinter of the Meet for his winning performance in the 500-meter run (1:06.30)
Heidelberg junior Julius Higginbotham (Elyria/ Elyria) won the long jump (23-08.00) and Muskingum sophomore Demetrius Bailey (Buffalo, NY/Olean) won the triple jump (46-08.75). For their efforts, both were named the 2008 Bud Yoest Field Athlete of the Meet.
The top-three relays and individuals earn All-OAC honors.
