Ohio Northern Men’s Tennis Falls to Calvin in NCAA Tournament

Kalamazoo, MI — Ohio Northern men’s tennis team fell to Calvin 9-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.With the loss, ONU ends its season with a 14-8 overall record. Calvin improves to 18-5.
The Polar Bears, making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, didn’t go easily, as Bart Schenck and Micah Scott battled #13 Ricky Tilton and Marcus Zeilstra at the first doubles spot. Tilton and Zeilstra pulled out a hard-fought 9-7 victory.
At the No 2 doubles, Chris Dohner and Ryan Paul also pushed Mike Goorhouse and Rafael Siebenschein to the limit, falling 8-6.
In the singles matches, the match of the day belonged to Tilton and Scott at the No. 1 spot. Scott won the first set 7-6 (7-2). Tilton responded by winning the second set 6-4 to force a third set, that he eventually won 9-7.The No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches also went three sets. Siebenschein held off Paul 6-1, 5-7, 7-2 in the No. 3 match and Steve DeMaagd of Calvin rallied to defeat Dohner 5-7, 6-4, 7-4.
In the other two singles matches, Goorhouse defeated Kyle Webb of ONU 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match and San Volkema of Calvin downed Jay Vaidya 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Polar Bears end a successful season, winning back-to-back OAC regular season titles and claiming their sixth OAC Tournament title. |
