Heidelberg Set to Host the 2008 OAC Baseball Tournament

Austintown, OH -Heidelberg will host the 2008 OAC Baseball Tournament Thursday-Saturday May 8-10 at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin, Ohio. Heidelberg finished the season at the top of the standings with a 15-3 mark to become the regular-season champions and earn the right to host the tournament. Heidelberg will be the number one seed followed by number two Marietta, number three Otterbein and number four Mount Union.
Kicking off the tournament will be No. 2 Marietta (13-5/21-18) versus No. 3 Otterbein (12-6/25-12) at 1p.m.on Thursday. Otterbein swept Marietta during the regular season. Marietta has appeared the OAC Tournament each year since it went to a four-team format in 1985. Otterbein will be making its 13th appearance. The Pioneers and Cardinals have met eleven times in tournament play, most recently in 2007, when Otterbein defeating Marietta, 7-3, in game one.
Leading Marietta this season has been junior Cameron Cimino (Boardman), batting .397 in 119 at bats with 46 hits, 35 runs 11 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 38 RBI. Senior Dominick Winters (Washington, Pa.) is batting .378 in 119 at bats with 31 runs, 45 hits, six doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI.
On the mound, junior TJ Knowlton (Greenwich/Mapleton) is leading the Pioneers with a 3.18 ERA in 73.2 innings, with 75 hits and 33 runs (26 earned runs) and 42 strikeouts.
The Cardinals are lead by sophomore Brian Hiscox (Burton/Berkshire), who is batting .364 in a 107 at bats, with 34 runs, 39 hits, eight doubles, 12 home runs and 38 RBI. Senior Dan Remenowsky (Cincinnati/Moeller) is leading the team, pitching 52 innings with a 5-1record, a 1.71 ERA and 50 strike outs.
The second game of the tournament will pit No.1 Heidelberg (15-3/33-7) against No. 4 Mount Union (11-7/20-16). Heidelberg swept the Raiders during the regular season. Both Heidelberg and Mount Union will be making its ninth tournament appearance since 1985.
Junior Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown/St. Charles),is batting .410 in a 156 at bats with 42 runs, 64 hits, seven doubles, seven triples and 28 RBI for the Berg. Freshman Jason Lash is batting .441 in a 136 at bats with 38 runs, 60 hits, nine doubles, two triples, two homeruns and 40 RBI.
On the mound the Berg is lead by freshman Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne Ind. / Carroll), with a 1.95 ERA in 37 innings. Lowe has tallied eight runs, eight earned runs and struck out 28. Senior Steve Calevro (Perrysburg) with a 1.74 ERA (5-0) in 31 innings, with 24 hits, 10 runs, six earned runs and 24 strike outs will also lead the team in the tournament.
Mount Union is lead by freshman Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green), batting .412 in 119 at bats with 40 runs, 49 hits, seven doubles, three triples, four home runs and 29 RBI. Sophomore Paul Mariotti (Copley), with a 3.70 ERA in 56 innings, giving up 50 hits, 27 runs, 23 earned runs and 38 strike outs is the leading the Purple Raiders on the mound.
